Brief History

The Oakridge-Westfir area witnessed the birth of a vibrant Lutheran community when worship services commenced on February 17, 1935. This crucial moment in the history of the local religious community was marked by the first service at the Community Show Hall. Reverend Martin J. Simon, of Grace Lutheran Church Eugene, led this inaugural service, fostering a sense of unity and shared faith among the community members as they joined together in prayer and worship.

St. Luke's congregation has its roots in a mission initially sponsored by Grace Lutheran Church in Eugene. This mission, which began in 1941 and continued until 1953, laid the foundation for what would become a thriving spiritual community. During this formative period, worship services were held at the Westfir Community Church, a central location that nurtured the spiritual growth and fellowship of the congregation.

In April 1953, the congregation was formally organized under the watchful guidance of Vicar Gary Pera. This milestone marked a new chapter in the congregation's journey as thirty-nine communicant members were welcomed into the fold, with a few still actively engaged with the church today. The formal organization of the congregation signaled the establishment of a resilient and faith-driven community, dedicated to supporting its members and serving the spiritual needs of the Oakridge-Westfir area.

On the tragic day of May 26, 1965, the congregation faced a devastating loss when a fire ravaged their church building, leaving them without a dedicated space for worship. Despite this immense challenge, the community's unwavering faith and resilience persevered. During this period of hardship, members continued to gather for services in available spaces such as Oakridge school buildings and the Westfir Community Church until 1967.

With renewed hope and determination, the groundbreaking for the present church occurred on August 7, 1966, under the committed leadership of Pastor Wiese. Demonstrating his dedication to fostering faith communities, Pastor Wiese simultaneously served Pleasant Hill as a mission building, contributing to the construction of a new church building there. This new chapter in the congregation's history symbolized their resilience and steadfast commitment to their faith, even in the face of adversity.

In February 1967, St. Luke's congregation celebrated the dedication of their new church building, marking a triumphant rebirth of their faith community. Reverend Donald Hinrichs graced the event as the honored speaker, sharing words of inspiration and encouragement. This pivotal moment in the congregation's journey demonstrated their unwavering dedication to serving the spiritual needs of the Oakridge-Westfir community and their resolve to overcome challenges in the pursuit of their faith.

The congregation's commitment to nurturing spiritual growth and providing educational opportunities for its members led to the construction of the Education Building. This essential addition to the St. Luke's campus was dedicated on December 6, 1987. The Education Building, designed to support the ongoing religious education and development of the congregation, has played a pivotal role in the church's ministry ever since.

Within its walls, the Education Building houses various classrooms, meeting rooms, and gathering spaces for Bible studies, Sunday school classes, and other faith-based activities. These spaces provide members of all ages with a comfortable and welcoming environment to explore their faith, ask questions, and deepen their spiritual understanding. It was also a home for Head Start for a few years in serving the community educational needs.

The dedication of the Education Building not only expanded St. Luke's physical footprint but also demonstrated the congregation's dedication to fostering a strong, faith-filled community. By providing a space specifically designed for education and spiritual growth, St. Luke's Church continues to inspire its members and enrich the lives of those in the Oakridge-Westfir area.
